Overall Objectives and Purpose of the role

Reporting to the EVP, PPS & BD, the (Senior) Director, Business Development (BD) is a highly visible position responsible for developing and executing Innate's BD strategy and functional plans in line with Innate's corporate objectives.
You will take the lead on business development activities, including identifying, researching, evaluating, structuring, negotiating new external business partnerships and opportunities, executing on transactions and contracts, to support the long-term growth of Innate's business.
Through direct collaboration with the Executive Committee (ComEx) and other governance committees, this role will offer the ideal candidate an exciting opportunity to be a part of a growing team and to leverage your rich experience in pharmaceutical/biotech management to play an instrumental role in shaping the next phase of out-licensing partnership growth for Innate.
Main responsibilities and key tasks

Leadership and growth:

  • Act as the business development/transaction interface between internal team members and potential partner companies, driving the deal process from initial prospecting, technical review, proposal creation, contract drafting, negotiation, and implementation (overseeing end-to-end execution)
  • Developing the business case and overall assessment of the opportunity including the financial model working cross-functionally with other functions (e.g. finance, legal and tax, research, CMC, medical, legal, IP, Regulatory, Marketing and Sales)
  • Playing a lead role in the innovation and enhancement of business development services and products within Innate – aiming to grow our forecasting offering through the development of new capabilities and business (building forecasts, corporate and valuation model)
  • Proactive, hands-on approach to business development to ensure that revenue targets and key performance indicators are constantly over-achieved with incremental revenue growth from both the existing partnerships, as well as identifying and penetrating within new partners
  • Conducting and utilizing market research and insights on patient needs and market trends in support of business development and partnering discussions, constantly monitoring market landscape and changing priorities if needed
  • Continuously evaluate current portfolio from cost and risk management perspective, identify products for alternate source development

Partner relationships and collaborations:

  • Actively building, growing and maintaining in and out-licensing partner relationships to increase awareness of business development opportunities, ensuring a presence at all major partnering and scientific meetings
  • Clearly identifying and understanding stakeholder challenges and unmet needs, and providing thought-leadership in identifying opportunities, mitigating possible areas of risk and adding value to their business practices and performance, throughout development and commercialization of products
  • Leading and organizing full due diligence, including commercial, R&D, and input from non-R&D functions, if required, e.g. IP, Legal, establishing processes to track to drive the rigorous scientific evaluation of potential assets and delivering clear recommendations to key governance bodies including the ComEx
  • Measuring compliance of business alliances in post agreement scenario
  • Proactively identify and pursue opportunities with the existing partners within portfolio to drive higher revenues by engaging with them on newer prospects and areas of their business where Innate can lend its expertise and add value
  • Creating/writing/developing and presenting innovative, convincing, and effective responses to partner requests and solicitations


Experience and Qualifications:

  • Biomedical PhD (or related, e.g. Science or Business)
  • 5-7 years + demonstrable relevant business development and strong deal-making experience working within the Biotech/Pharma industry with a deep understanding of the different challenges of Partnering and out-licensing deals (ideally within EU and US (ROW is an advantage))
  • Strong knowledge in the areas of oncology, novel cell therapies and immunotherapy products
  • Deep understanding of forecasting as a discipline, and familiarity of working with/developing forecasts and corporate models for US market required (preferably for Pharma & Biotech assets)
  • Experience conducting market research for biopharma pipeline or in-line assets
  • Proven project leadership, business and strategic acumen with the know-how of having led the delivery of (multiple) partnered projects, with a focus on service quality, resource management and relationship management
  • Demonstrated experience of managing and working within global cross-functional teams remotely and operating within different time zones

Technical Competencies:

  • Expertise/ knowledge with pharmaceutical data-sets, databases, practices, audits and recent developments in the field of patient-data (would be preferred)
  • Knowledge of Regulatory Requirements
  • Experience with Tradeshows/ Congresses/ Conferences with established industry connections and networks
  • Advanced writing competence and of reviewing and synthesizing clinical and technical literature
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software (Excel, Power Point, Word, etc.)
  • A highly articulate communicator with Excellent command of the English language, spoken and written (bi-lingual in French an advantage)

  • Demonstrated critical thinking, time management, decision-making, and problem-solving, solution-oriented approach to value-addition

  • Outstanding attention to detail and the perseverance to comply with the highest standards of quality
  • Willingness to travel to other global locations for partners and internal purposes, as needed (60% of the time)
